III. Fault Symptoms and Diagnosis

Typical Fault Symptoms

The fuel pressure warning light illuminates; the ECM reports a fault regarding the fuel pressure sensor circuit, range, or performance.

Difficulty starting, unstable idling, sluggish acceleration, and reduced power output.

Abnormally high fuel consumption, emission of black smoke from the exhaust, and incomplete combustion.

The fuel pressure reading on the instrument panel appears abnormally high, abnormally low, or shows no display.

Common Fault Codes (CAT / Generic)

P0191/P0192/P0193/P0194: Fuel pressure sensor circuit / signal fault.

P0087: Fuel system pressure too low (related to this sensor).

Quick Diagnostic Steps

Power Supply Check: Measure the 5V reference voltage and ground connection at the sensor connector to verify they are within normal limits.

Signal Test: Start the engine and measure the output voltage (approx. 0.5V at 0 pressure; approx. 4.5V at full scale). 

Physical Inspection: Check the connector for looseness, corrosion, or water intrusion; inspect the sensor housing for cracks; and verify that the installation sealing and torque meet specifications. 

Comparison Test: Replace the sensor with a known-good unit of the same model to verify whether the fault is resolved (facilitating rapid identification of the fault source).
